Product Description

Pyrrhocactus scoparia is a rare and visually striking cactus native to the arid inland valleys of northern Chile. This species grows as a solitary, globular to short-columnar plant, with a dark olive-brown to greenish-gray body that often blends with the stony soils around it. Its surface is carved by deep ribs and lined with areoles bearing an intricate network of long, recurved spines in amber, reddish, or dark gray tones.

What makes Pyrrhocactus scoparia stand out is its dramatic spination, which forms a wild, bristling crown over the body. The curved spines vary in length and direction, giving the plant a unique, sculptural character. During late spring or early summer, it produces soft yellow to pale orange flowers, adding subtle color and contrast to the otherwise armored form. The blooms are short-lived but highly decorative.

  • Dense, curved spines form a protective cage around the body

  • Compact size with deeply ribbed, dark-toned surface

  • Yellow-orange flowers appear seasonally near the apex

  • Thrives in full sun and rocky, dry habitats

  • Ideal for collectors seeking rare Chilean cacti

Tough and beautiful, Pyrrhocactus scoparia is a natural fit for dry, rocky gardens or container displays. Its compact form, bold spination, and Chilean heritage make it an excellent choice for serious cactus enthusiasts.
