Plant Description
Euphorbia horrida is a striking, sculptural succulent from South Africa, famed for its ferocious beauty and spiny architecture. This spiny Euphorbia resembles a cactus at first glance, with its deeply ridged, upright stems that form dense, clustered mounds. Each stem is a cylindrical column, coated in waxy blue-green to greyish-green skin, and lined with prominent spiny tubercles along the ribs. These spines, which can range in color from white to brown or reddish, are modified sterile peduncles—distinct from cactus spines—and give Euphorbia horrida its fearsome, armored look. Often confused with members of the cactus family, it sets itself apart through its tiny yellow cyathia, the unique floral structures typical of Euphorbias. These appear intermittently near the stem tips and add a subtle but botanical elegance. Its capacity to thrive in arid conditions, along with its otherworldly, prehistoric form and remarkable texture, makes Euphorbia horrida a showstopper in any xerophytic collection or succulent display. Despite its rugged look, it's a plant of great detail and resilience—rare, architectural, and collectible.
