Plant Description

The Citrus sinensis TAROCCO (Sicily), a celebrated Sicilian variety of sweet orange, is renowned for its richly pigmented flesh, which can range from blushed orange to deep ruby red, especially when exposed to cool winter nights. This cultivar, hailing from the volcanic soils surrounding Mount Etna, is cherished not only for its intensely aromatic juice and low acidity but also for its aesthetic allure. The Citrus sinensis TAROCCO (Sicily) tree boasts glossy, evergreen leaves and fragrant white blossoms that perfume the air in spring. Its medium-sized, round fruits mature from late December through April, and are typically seedless or contain very few seeds. Unlike other blood oranges, the pigmentation of the 'Tarocco' is more subtle and marbled, a result of anthocyanin development influenced by Sicily’s unique climate. This variety is often considered the sweetest and most balanced among blood oranges, making it a favorite in orchards and gardens alike. A rare jewel of Mediterranean citrus cultivation, the Tarocco orange combines ornamental value with exceptional fruit quality.
