Product Description

Astrophytum asterias cv SUPERKABUTO V-TYPE is a botanical rarity coveted for its distinctive symmetry, extreme ornamentation, and elite collector status among cactus cultivars. Unlike its wild-type counterpart, this cultivar is celebrated for its flat, spineless, button-like body, which typically remains under 5 cm tall but expands in width up to 8–10 cm, creating a low, perfectly circular profile. Its eight geometric ribs are marked by a pronounced “V-shaped” white flecking pattern, consisting of dense, snow-like trichomes that radiate outwards in crisp chevrons. This V-TYPE flecking creates an astonishing contrast with the deep olive-green epidermis, giving the plant a crystalline, almost pixelated texture. The apex is typically adorned with a cluster of fine woolly areoles, from which emerge lemon-yellow, daisy-like flowers with a vivid orange center during peak summer. As a SUPERKABUTO selection, it exhibits genetic stability in variegation, slow but refined growth, and exceptional uniqueness—no two specimens are alike. Its aesthetic balance between mathematical form and natural artistry makes it one of the most sought-after and visually striking members of the Astrophytum genus.

Cultivation

Soil type: Extremely well-draining mineral-based cactus soil; avoid organic-heavy mixes.

Watering frequency: Water sparingly during growing season (spring to early autumn), every 10–14 days; keep completely dry in winter.

Light exposure: Bright indirect light or gentle morning sun; avoid harsh midday rays to prevent sun scorch.

Temperature requirements: Optimal between 18–32°C (64–90°F); protect from cold below 5°C (41°F).

Fertilization: Use low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer diluted monthly during active growth.

Pruning: Not required; remove spent flowers if desired.

Common pests: Susceptible to mealybugs and root rot; maintain sterile soil and monitor airflow.

Other care practices: Ideal for containers with side ventilation; grafting is sometimes used to enhance vigor, but own-root growth is most prized by collectors.
