Product Description

The Agave titanota cv. Himawari ひまわり 'Mediopcita Yellow Variegated' is a rare and highly decorative cultivar prized for its tight, symmetrical rosette and dazzling yellow variegation. This compact form of Agave titanota—native to Oaxaca’s arid limestone regions—has been refined into a bold collector’s item through selective cultivation. The name Himawari, meaning "sunflower" in Japanese, suits its sunburst-like leaf pattern, where each broad, cupped leaf displays a buttery yellow center or margin depending on the clone, dramatically offset by cool grey-green to bluish hues along the rest of the leaf. Each leaf edge is lined with sculptural, deeply notched spines and tipped with an assertive dark terminal spine, creating the signature titanota silhouette. The Mediopcita variegation—a unique blend of medial and marginal streaks—adds even more complexity, making this succulent a centerpiece for xeric collections, designer containers, or minimalist gardens. Its slow growth and scarce availability further elevate its value among rare agave collectors and variegated plant enthusiasts.

Cultivation

Soil type: Use fast-draining soil with at least 50% mineral content such as pumice, lava rock, or perlite.

Watering frequency: Water thoroughly but infrequently; allow soil to fully dry between waterings. Cut back in winter.

Light exposure: Requires bright light to full sun; in very intense heat, offer partial shade to avoid variegation burn.

Temperature requirements: Ideal between 15°C and 30°C (59°F to 86°F); avoid temperatures below 5°C (41°F).

Fertilization: Apply diluted cactus fertilizer once a month during spring and summer only.

Pruning: Minimal pruning—remove dry or damaged leaves with sterile tools.

Common pests: Vulnerable to agave snout weevils, mealybugs, and aphids; ensure airflow and inspect regularly.

Other care practices: Avoid excess moisture around the crown and use clay pots for better breathability when grown in containers.
