Plant Description

Sorbus aucuparia, commonly known as rowan, European mountain ash, or vogelbeere, is a deciduous tree native to most of Europe and parts of Asia, valued for its ornamental foliage, vivid berries, and wildlife appeal. Reaching up to 10–15 meters in height, it displays a graceful, airy crown with pinnate leaves composed of 11 to 19 serrated leaflets, which turn brilliant yellow, orange, and red in autumn. In late spring, the tree produces flat-topped clusters of creamy-white flowers that are rich in nectar, attracting bees and other pollinators. By late summer, these mature into abundant clusters of bright orange-red berries that persist into winter and serve as a vital food source for birds, particularly thrushes and waxwings. The berries, though bitter raw, are rich in vitamin C and traditionally used in jellies, wines, and herbal remedies. Sorbus aucuparia is highly tolerant of cold, poor soils, and urban pollution, making it ideal for gardens, streetscapes, and rewilding projects. Its mythological associations—often believed to ward off evil—add cultural depth to its botanical charm. A species of ecological and historical value, Sorbus aucuparia is as meaningful as it is beautiful, offering multi-season interest through its flowers, foliage, and fruit.
