Plant Description
Pereskiopsis velutina is a highly unusual member of the cactus family, standing apart due to its combination of succulent stems and fully developed, broad green leaves—a rarity among cacti. This tropical-looking species features slender, velvety stems that are often a dusky green or purplish hue, covered in fine, short trichomes that give the plant a soft, fuzzy appearance. Unlike most cacti, Pereskiopsis velutina retains a leafy habit throughout its life, which not only aids in photosynthesis but gives it a semi-shrubby form. Often growing upright and branching, it can reach over 2 meters in height under optimal conditions. Its most notable feature is its rapid growth and adaptability, making it a prized rootstock for grafting slow-growing cacti. Native to Mexico, this species thrives in warmth and humidity, and while it may bear small, inconspicuous yellowish flowers, its real charm lies in its lush, almost tropical foliage, thorny areoles, and curious contradiction: a leafy cactus that bridges the gap between succulent and shrub. Its rarity outside specialist collections adds to its allure among cactophiles.
