Product Description
Echinocactus platyacanthus, also known as the Giant Barrel Cactus, is an awe-inspiring species native to central and northern Mexico, reaching up to 1.5 meters tall and over 1 meter wide with age. It features a deeply ribbed, dark green cylindrical body protected by broad, flat central spines ranging from gray to dark reddish-brown. Its imposing structure is crowned in summer by a ring of yellow flowers, emerging from a woolly apex. A true desert giant, this species can live for over a century in the wild.

Cultivation
Soil type: Mineral-rich, alkaline, and extremely well-draining cactus mix with gravel or pumice.
Watering frequency: Water thoroughly when completely dry; very sparingly in winter.
Light exposure: Full sun to light shade; needs strong light to maintain compact form.
Temperature requirements: Ideal range 22–38°C (72–100°F); tolerates down to 5°C (41°F) if kept dry.
Fertilization: Monthly in the growing season with low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.
Pruning: Not necessary; remove dead flowers if desired.
Common pests: Susceptible to mealybugs and root scale.
Any other relevant care practices: Use deep containers or plant in open ground for long-term growth; slow-growing but very hardy.
