Echinocactus platyacanthus, also known as the Giant Barrel Cactus, is an awe-inspiring species native to central and northern Mexico, reaching up to 1.5 meters tall and over 1 meter wide with age. It features a deeply ribbed, dark green cylindrical body protected by broad, flat central spines ranging from gray to dark reddish-brown. Its imposing structure is crowned in summer by a ring of yellow flowers, emerging from a woolly apex. A true desert giant, this species can live for over a century in the wild.
