Plant Description
Chitalpa tashkentensis is a captivating deciduous hybrid tree that merges the ornamental beauty of its parent species—Catalpa bignonioides and Chilopsis linearis—into a single, show-stopping landscape specimen. Developed in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, this intergeneric hybrid is prized for its long blooming season, fast growth, and overall drought resistance. It forms a broad, vase-shaped canopy and typically grows between 6 and 12 meters tall, offering lush shade through its dense display of narrow, willow-like leaves. What makes Chitalpa tashkentensis truly exceptional is its profuse summer flowering: from late spring to early autumn, it produces abundant clusters of orchid-like, trumpet-shaped flowers in varying shades of soft pink to pale lavender, often streaked with subtle purple markings. The blooms are sterile, meaning it doesn't produce messy seedpods, making it especially tidy for urban gardens. With its tolerance for heat, aridity, and alkaline soils, Chitalpa tashkentensis offers both resilience and refined elegance, ideal for dry-climate landscapes.
