Plant Description

Echinocactus grusonii cv. setispinus, commonly referred to as the Golden Barrel Cactus or Mother-in-Law’s Cushion, is a captivating variety of the classic Golden Barrel Cactus, distinguished by its more pronounced spines. Native to the deserts of Mexico, this globular cactus has become a favorite among cactus enthusiasts and gardeners for both indoor and outdoor cultivation due to its striking appearance and resilience. Here's a closer look at its characteristics:

  • Appearance: This cactus variety boasts a spherical to slightly elongated shape, covered in a dense array of long, yellow to golden spines that can become more pronounced and sharp compared to the standard Echinocactus grusonii. The spines provide a striking contrast against its green to blue-green body.
  • Size: It can grow quite large over time, reaching up to 2-3 feet in diameter. The rate of growth is relatively slow, making it a long-lasting addition to any cactus collection.
  • Flowers: Like its parent species, Echinocactus grusonii cv. setispinus may produce yellow flowers at the top of the cactus, although flowering is rare and typically occurs in mature specimens that are well-cared for.

Cultivation

Cultivation Tips

Light: Requires full sun to partial shade. A position that offers direct sunlight for most of the day is ideal, as it encourages healthy growth and spine development.

Soil: Well-draining soil is essential. Use a cactus mix or incorporate sand, perlite, and pumice into regular potting soil to improve drainage.

Watering: Water sparingly, only when the soil is completely dry. Over-watering can lead to root rot, a common issue for cacti. In winter, reduce watering significantly to mimic its natural dormant period.

Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures but can tolerate cooler temperatures down to about 25°F (-4°C) for short periods. Protection from frost is necessary to prevent damage to the spines and skin.

Fertilization: During the growing season (spring and summer), you can apply a diluted cactus fertilizer once a month to support its slow growth.

Repotting: Due to its slow growth, repotting is rarely needed but can be done every few years to refresh the soil. Be cautious of the sharp spines during this process.

Echinocactus grusonii cv. setispinus is an impressive and low-maintenance cactus that adds a dramatic flair to gardens, patios, and indoor spaces. With proper care, this stunning cactus can thrive for many years, slowly growing into a magnificent specimen that captures the essence of desert beauty.
