Plant Description

The Zanthoxylum simulans, commonly called Sichuan Pepper or Chinese Prickly Ash, is a deciduous shrub or small tree recognized for its thorny branches and aromatic compound leaves. The leaves are dark green, finely toothed, and release a citrusy fragrance when crushed. This plant is famous for its tiny red fruit capsules, which split open to reveal black seeds and produce the signature numbing, tingling effect used in Sichuan cuisine. In early summer, it produces clusters of small, yellow-green flowers that add ornamental interest. Cold-hardy and adaptable, it thrives in a variety of landscapes.
