Plant Description

The Field Elm (Ulmus minor) is a medium to large deciduous tree recognized for its broad, spreading crown and deeply ridged, dark gray bark. Its leaves are oval with serrated edges and prominent veins, usually rough on the upper surface and turning golden yellow in the fall. Ulmus minor grows up to 100 feet tall, forming dense, arching branches that create a lush canopy. In early spring, it produces small, greenish flowers that lack petals, followed by winged seeds, or samaras, which disperse in the wind. Native to Europe, Field Elm is valued in both natural landscapes and urban settings for its shade and classic form.
