Product Description

The Trichocereus terscheckii, commonly known as the Argentine Saguaro or Cardón Grande, is a striking columnar cactus that can grow up to 30 feet tall in its native habitat, resembling a tree with thick, upright stems and occasional branching. The stems are blue-green when young, aging to a grayish green, with pronounced ribs and clusters of long, yellowish spines along the edges. This cactus produces large, showy white flowers at the top of the stems in spring or early summer, which bloom at night and attract pollinators. These flowers are followed by edible, spiny fruits that contain small, black seeds. T. terscheckii is highly valued as a landscape cactus for its imposing stature and dramatic appearance.

Cultivation

Soil type: Prefers well-drained, sandy, or gritty soil suitable for cacti, with excellent drainage.

Watering frequency: Water thoroughly during the growing season, allowing soil to dry out completely between waterings; reduce watering in winter.

Light exposure: Requires full sun, ideally at least 6-8 hours per day, for optimal growth.

Temperature requirements: Thrives in warm climates and can tolerate brief temperatures down to 25°F (-4°C), but requires protection from prolonged frost.

Fertilization: Use a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season to promote strong growth.

Pruning: Rarely needed, but damaged stems can be trimmed back to maintain appearance.

Common pests: Look out for scale insects and mealybugs; treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil as needed.
