Taxodium distichum
Taxodium distichum
Plant Description
The Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) is a majestic, long-lived deciduous conifer native to swampy areas of the southeastern United States. Known for its tall, straight trunk and feathery, bright green needles that turn a warm copper in fall before dropping, this tree typically grows 50–70 feet tall, though it can reach over 100 feet in ideal conditions. Taxodium distichum is famous for its "knees" or root outgrowths that appear in wet soils, which help with oxygen exchange. This feature, along with its fluted, buttressed trunk, gives the Bald Cypress a distinctive, ancient appearance, making it popular in parks and large landscapes.
