Sophora japonica (syn. Styphnolobium japonicum)
Plant Description
Sophora japonica, or the Japanese pagoda tree, is a deciduous tree admired for its elegant arching branches and finely textured compound leaves. The leaves are dark green and feathery, with numerous small leaflets that create a lush, layered canopy. In late summer, clusters of creamy-white flowers bloom, attracting bees and producing a delicate fragrance. The flowers give way to greenish seed pods resembling strings of beads, which mature to a brownish color in fall. Growing up to 15–25 meters, this graceful tree is often used in urban landscapes for its hardiness and shade.
