Quercus x crenata
Quercus x crenata
Plant Description
Quercus x crenata, commonly known as the Spanish Oak or Cork Oak Hybrid, is an intriguing hybrid between the Quercus cerris (Turkey Oak) and Quercus suber (Cork Oak). This semi-evergreen tree has thick, leathery, dark green leaves with rounded lobes and slightly serrated edges, resembling both parents. The tree’s bark is rugged, gray-brown, and corky, sometimes showing the distinctive furrowed texture of cork oak. It can reach heights of 15-20 meters (50-65 feet), forming a broad, rounded canopy. Small catkins appear in spring, followed by acorns, which attract wildlife and contribute to local ecosystems.
