Plant Description

Quercus faginea, commonly known as the Portuguese Oak or Gall Oak, is a deciduous or semi-evergreen oak tree native to the Iberian Peninsula and parts of North Africa. Growing to a height of 15-30 cm when young, it eventually matures into a medium to large tree up to 20 meters tall. The leaves are dark green, lobed, and have a leathery texture, often turning reddish or yellowish in autumn. In spring, it produces small catkins that are wind-pollinated, followed by acorns encased in a scaly cup. This oak is valued for its hard, durable wood and its ability to thrive in a variety of soil types and climates.
