Plant Description

The Pistacia terebinthus, known as the terebinth or turpentine tree, is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree native to the Mediterranean. Its dark green, glossy pinnate leaves feature 5-9 paired leaflets, giving it a lush, feathery appearance. In spring, the tree produces dense clusters of small, reddish flowers that develop into small, berry-like drupes which mature to a deep red or purple in autumn. The bark is often reddish-brown and can exude a fragrant resin, historically valued for its use in perfumes and incense. The foliage has a unique, slightly resinous aroma when bruised.
