Product Description

Osmanthus x burkwoodii, often referred to simply as Burkwood Osmanthus, is a popular and highly regarded evergreen shrub that belongs to the Oleaceae family. This hybrid plant is a cross between two Osmanthus species: Osmanthus delavayi and Osmanthus decorus. Known for its attractive appearance and delightful fragrance, Burkwood Osmanthus is a favorite choice for gardens and landscapes.

Burkwood Osmanthus is celebrated for its handsome, leathery, and dark green leaves, which are oval to elliptical in shape and arranged opposite each other along its branches. These leaves provide year-round interest and serve as an elegant backdrop to the plant's small, tubular flowers. The flowers are typically white or pale cream in color and produce a sweet, citrus-like fragrance that fills the air in late spring to early summer. The combination of fragrant blooms and evergreen foliage makes Burkwood Osmanthus a sought-after ornamental shrub. It typically reaches a height and spread of 6 to 10 feet (1.8 to 3 meters) with a dense, rounded growth habit.

Cultivation:

  1. Sunlight: Burkwood Osmanthus thrives in full sun to partial shade. It can tolerate some shade but may produce fewer flowers in deep shade.

  2. Soil: Well-draining, fertile soil is essential for optimal growth. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogged roots. Amending the soil with organic matter can enhance its texture and fertility.

  3. Watering: Once established, Burkwood Osmanthus is moderately drought-tolerant. Water regularly during the growing season, especially during dry periods, but allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in the dormant season.

  4. Pruning: Prune Osmanthus x burkwoodii as needed to maintain its shape and remove dead or overgrown branches. Pruning is typically done after flowering, usually in late spring or early summer.

  5. Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering. Follow the recommended dosage on the fertilizer label.

  6. Mulching: Mulch the soil around the base of the plant to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain a more consistent soil temperature.

  7. Temperature and Hardiness: Burkwood Osmanthus is hardy in USDA hardiness zones 6 to 9. It can withstand mild cold temperatures but may require protection in harsh winters.

  8. Container Growing: While it is typically grown in gardens, Burkwood Osmanthus can also be cultivated in large containers or pots. Use a well-draining potting mix and ensure proper drainage in the container.

  9. Pests and Diseases: This shrub is generally resistant to common pests and diseases. However, monitor for issues like aphids or scale insects and address them promptly if they occur.

Osmanthus x burkwoodii, or Burkwood Osmanthus, is a versatile and visually appealing shrub known for its attractive foliage and captivating fragrance. Whether planted as a specimen shrub, in hedges, or as part of mixed borders, it adds beauty and fragrance to outdoor spaces while requiring relatively low maintenance.
