Juniperus communis
Juniperus communis
Plant Description
Juniperus communis, commonly known as the common juniper, is an evergreen shrub or small tree characterized by its dense, needle-like foliage. The leaves are typically blue-green and arranged in whorls of three, providing a prickly texture. This plant can grow up to 10-12 feet tall, but often remains a low, spreading shrub. Juniper berries, which are actually modified cones, start out green and mature to a dark blue-black. These berries are famously used in the production of gin. The bark is thin and brown, often peeling in narrow strips.
