Iris domestica syn. (Belamcanda chinensis)
Plant Description
Iris domestica, synonymously known as Belamcanda chinensis or the Blackberry Lily, is a captivating perennial that stands out for its unique star-shaped flowers and eye-catching seed pods. The plant features slender, sword-like leaves resembling those of traditional irises, forming a fan-shaped clump. In summer, Iris domestica produces striking orange flowers adorned with red or purple spots, resembling the patterns on a leopard, which is why it’s also known as the Leopard Lily. After blooming, the plant forms clusters of shiny black seeds that resemble blackberries, adding ornamental interest well into autumn. This hardy plant is valued for its beauty and ease of care, making it a favorite in perennial borders, rock gardens, or as a cut flower.
