Plant Description

The Dioscorea batatas, commonly known as the Chinese Yam, is a climbing vine with slender, twining stems that can reach lengths of up to 3 meters. It produces heart-shaped, dark green leaves with prominent veins, arranged alternately along its vines. The tubers are long, cylindrical, and edible, with a smooth, light-brown skin and white, starchy flesh. In late summer, the plant develops small, fragrant white to pale yellow flowers. This yam is known for its culinary and medicinal uses and is prized in many Asian cuisines for its nutritive tubers that have a delicate, slightly sweet flavor.
