Product Description

Cycas revoluta

Cycas revoluta, commonly known as the Sago Palm (though not a true palm), is a plant species belonging to the cycad genus, which is ancient, slow-growing, and native to southern Japan including the Ryukyu Islands. It is one of the most widely cultivated cycads, admired for its striking appearance and resilience.

The plant features a thick, shaggy trunk that can grow up to 10 meters (about 33 feet) in height in the wild, but is usually much smaller in cultivation. Atop this trunk sits a crown of stiff, feathery leaves that are glossy green and can reach up to 1-2 meters (3-6 feet) in length. These leaves are pinnate, meaning they are composed of a central stem with numerous leaflets arranged on either side, resembling the feathers of a bird.

Cycas revoluta is dioecious, meaning individual plants are either male or female. Male plants produce cone-like structures that release pollen, while female plants produce megasporophylls, which carry the seeds. The seeds are large, reddish, and have a fleshy coating.

Cultivation from Seeds

Cultivating Cycas revoluta from seeds is a rewarding, though slow process. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Seed Collection and Preparation: Mature seeds are typically bright orange or red. It's important to clean the seeds by removing the fleshy outer layer, which can be done by gently rubbing them between your hands or using a soft brush.

  2. Soaking: Soak the cleaned seeds in water for about 24 hours to hydrate them and encourage germination. Use warm, not hot, water.

  3. Stratification (Optional): Some growers recommend a period of cold stratification to mimic natural conditions and improve germination rates. This involves placing the seeds in a moist substrate like peat moss or vermiculite and refrigerating them for a period of 1-3 months.

  4. Planting: Plant the seeds in a well-draining soil mix, positioning them horizontally or with the pointed end slightly downward. Cover the seed with about 1 cm (0.4 inches) of soil. It's crucial to use a potting mix that drains well to prevent the seeds from rotting.

  5. Germination Conditions: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged and place the pot in a warm, bright spot but out of direct sunlight. Cycas revoluta seeds can take anywhere from 1-3 months to germinate, sometimes longer, so patience is key.

  6. Care After Germination: Once the seeds germinate and the seedlings establish themselves, you can gradually move them into more direct sunlight. Water the seedlings when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch.

  7. Transplanting: Seedlings can be transplanted into individual pots once they're large enough to handle safely. Continue to provide them with bright, indirect light and water as needed.
