Each head is globular to slightly cylindrical, with a dark green to bluish-green epidermis. The cactus has well-defined ribs adorned with small, stout, black or dark brown spines. In summer, it produces bright yellow, funnel-shaped flowers. Native to the arid regions of northern Chile, this species thrives in well-draining, sandy or rocky soils and full sunlight, demonstrating strong drought tolerance.
