Plant Description

Callicarpa bodinieri, commonly known as Bodinier's Beautyberry or simply Beautyberry, is a deciduous shrub appreciated for its ornamental value, primarily the bright and colorful berries it produces in the fall.

  1. Appearance:

    • Callicarpa bodinieri is a shrub that typically grows to a height of 3 to 6 feet (0.9 to 1.8 meters) with a similar spread.
    • The leaves are opposite, simple, and usually have a light green color during the growing season.
    • The real showstopper of this plant is its vibrant berries. In late summer to early fall, it produces clusters of small, rounded, and brilliantly colored berries that can be various shades of purple, violet, pink, or magenta, depending on the cultivar.
  2. Flowers:

    • In late spring to early summer, the shrub produces small, inconspicuous, pale pink to lavender flowers that are attractive to pollinators like bees and butterflies.
  3. Fruit:

    • The berries, which follow the flowers, are the main ornamental feature of Callicarpa bodinieri. They persist well into winter and can be a striking contrast against the shrub's bare branches.

Cultivation:

  1. Location:

    • Plant Beautyberry in a location that receives full sun to partial sun. It tends to produce more berries and display its best fall color in full sun.
  2. Soil:

    • Beautyberry prefers well-draining soil that is moderately fertile. It can tolerate a variety of soil types but thrives in loamy, slightly acidic to neutral soil.
  3. Watering:

    • Established Callicarpa bodinieri shrubs are relatively drought-tolerant and require little supplemental watering once they have settled in.
    • Water newly planted shrubs regularly to help establish their root systems. Avoid waterlogged or constantly soggy soil.
  4. Pruning:

    • Pruning is typically not necessary for Beautyberry, except to maintain its shape or remove dead or damaged branches.
    • If you do decide to prune, it's best done in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
  5. Fertilization:

    • Beautyberry generally doesn't require heavy fertilization. A balanced, slow-release fertilizer applied in early spring can suffice.
  6. Mulching:

    • Applying a layer of mulch around the base of the shrub can help conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds.
  7. Propagation:

    • Callicarpa bodinieri can be propagated from semi-hardwood cuttings taken in late spring or early summer. Ensure that the cuttings have a heel (a small portion of older stem) attached.
  8. Pest and Disease Resistance:

    • Beautyberry is generally resistant to most pests and diseases. However, you may occasionally encounter common garden pests like aphids or scale insects. These can be managed with appropriate treatments if needed.

Callicarpa bodinieri, with its vibrant berries and attractive foliage, can be a fantastic addition to your garden or landscape, particularly in the fall and winter when the berries provide a burst of color. With the right care, it can thrive and become a beautiful and low-maintenance shrub in your outdoor space.
