Product Description

Astrophytum myriostigma, commonly known as the Bishop's Cap Cactus, is a unique and interesting plant native to the highlands of northeastern and central Mexico. Here's a detailed description and some cultivation tips:

Description:

  1. Shape & Size: This cactus has a distinct globular to columnar shape, usually growing with 5 (rarely 4 or 6) deep ribs. Young plants are more spherical, while older specimens become more columnar. Mature plants can reach up to 70 cm in height and about 15-20 cm in diameter.
  2. Skin & Surface: The skin of the Astrophytum myriostigma is green, covered with tiny white felt-like dots (trichomes) giving it a speckled appearance.
  3. Spines: This species is notable for its lack of spines, a characteristic that distinguishes it from many other cacti.
  4. Flowers: It produces large, yellow flowers from the crown of the plant during the summer. These flowers can be up to 5 cm in diameter.
  5. Fruit & Seeds: The fruits are small, fleshy, and red, containing black seeds.

Cultivation Tips:

  1. Lighting: Needs plenty of sunlight. A south-facing window is ideal. However, it should be protected from intense midday sun, especially in hot climates.
  2. Watering: Water moderately during the growing season (spring and summer) and allow the soil to dry out between waterings. In winter, reduce watering significantly.
  3. Soil: Prefers a well-draining cactus mix. You can make your own mix with equal parts of potting soil, coarse sand, and perlite or pumice.
  4. Temperature: It enjoys warm temperatures but can tolerate light frost. Ideally, keep it in temperatures above 5°C (41°F).
  5. Fertilizing: Feed with a cactus fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
  6. Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years to refresh the soil and provide room for growth. Handle carefully to avoid damaging the root system.
  7. Pests & Diseases: Watch out for root rot (due to overwatering) and pests like mealybugs. Maintain proper care to prevent these issues.

By following these cultivation tips, your Astrophytum myriostigma should thrive, bringing a unique and exotic touch to your cactus collection
