Product Description

Astrophytum asterias X myriostigma 'White Variegated' is a hybrid cactus that combines characteristics of both Astrophytum asterias, commonly known as the "Sand Dollar Cactus" or "Sea Urchin Cactus", and Astrophytum myriostigma, known as the "Bishop's Cap". The 'White Variegated' refers to the unique variegation that appears on the cactus, making it highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts. This plant is notable for its stunning appearance and rarity.

Description

The hybrid displays a body shape that can vary from almost spherical to columnar, depending on which parent's traits are more dominant. The most striking feature of this hybrid is its variegation. 'White Variegated' specimens have patches or streaks of white or light yellow on their green bodies. The variegation occurs due to a lack of chlorophyll in some parts of the plant's tissues, which reveals the underlying cell layers.

The surface of the plant is smooth, with areoles (spots where spines can grow) that are often spineless or have very few spines. This gives the cactus a more polished appearance compared to other species that have prominent spines.

Flowers are another spectacular aspect of this hybrid. They are large, daisy-like, and can range in color from yellow to red, often appearing at the top of the cactus during the spring and summer months.

Cultivation Tips

Light: This hybrid thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight can cause sunburn to the variegated areas, so it's important to provide some shade during the hottest parts of the day, especially in summer.

Soil: Use a well-draining cactus mix to prevent root rot. Adding pumice or perlite can enhance drainage further.

Water: Water moderately during the growing season (spring and summer) and allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During winter, reduce watering significantly to mimic the plant's natural dormant period.

Temperature: Astrophytum hybrids prefer warm temperatures but can tolerate cooler temperatures down to about 5°C (41°F) during their dormant winter period. Protect them from frost.

Feeding: Apply a diluted cactus fertilizer during the growing season every 4-6 weeks. Do not fertilize in winter.

Repotting: Repotting every 2-3 years in spring is recommended to refresh the soil and accommodate growth. Be careful when repotting to handle the root system gently, especially for variegated plants, as they can be more sensitive.

Pests/Diseases: Watch out for common succulent pests such as mealybugs and spider mites. Variegated plants can sometimes be more susceptible to pests and stress, so regular inspection and prompt treatment if pests are found are crucial.

With their unique appearance and striking variegation, Astrophytum asterias X myriostigma 'White Variegated' hybrids are a fascinating addition to any cactus collection. By providing the right care and conditions, you can enjoy the beauty of this rare hybrid for many years.
