Product Description

Aloe arborescens, commonly known as the Krantz Aloe or Tree Aloe, is a well-known and widely cultivated species in the Aloe genus. Native to southern Africa, it is renowned for its medicinal properties, striking appearance, and adaptability, making it a popular choice in gardens worldwide.

  1. Appearance: Aloe arborescens typically forms a large, multi-headed shrub with rosettes of succulent leaves. The leaves are long, fleshy, and edged with small teeth, arching gracefully from the central rosette.

  2. Color: The foliage is a vibrant green, sometimes exhibiting blue or grey hues. Under stressful conditions like drought or cold, the leaves can turn a reddish color.

  3. Size: It can grow quite large, reaching heights of up to 10 feet (3 meters) in some cases. Its size and branching habit give it a tree-like appearance, hence the name 'arborescens' (tree-like).

  4. Flowers: Aloe arborescens is known for its spectacular flowering display. It produces tall, branched spikes of tubular flowers, typically bright red or orange, although yellow-flowered varieties also exist. The flowers bloom in winter, providing a striking contrast against the green foliage.

  5. Growth Habit: This species often grows in large clumps, with new rosettes forming at the base and older ones branching outwards.

Cultivation

  • Light: Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Adequate sunlight is crucial for flowering.
  • Soil: Does best in well-draining soil. It is tolerant of a variety of soil types but thrives in sandy or rocky soils.
  • Watering: Drought-tolerant, it requires minimal watering. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
  • Climate: It is hardy and adaptable to various climates but should be protected from severe frost.

Aloe arborescens is not only valued for its ornamental qualities but also for its medicinal uses, as its leaves contain a gel similar to that of Aloe vera, widely used in traditional and alternative medicine. Its ease of care, resilience, and stunning floral display make it a favorite in succulent gardens, rockeries, and as an accent plant in mixed borders.
