Plant Description

The Opuntia sp. 2 km south of Tlaxcala, MEXICO (affinis to Opuntia guerrana) is a remarkable cactus native to central Mexico. This species exhibits flattened, oval to round pads called cladodes, which are covered with tiny spines known as glochids and occasionally larger spines. The pads are green to bluish-green and serve as the plant’s main photosynthetic organs. In spring to summer, it produces vibrant yellow flowers with a delicate, silky texture, followed by red or purple edible fruits. Adapted to arid environments, this Opuntia is drought-resistant and thrives in rocky, well-draining soils.
