Plant Description

Opuntia ficus-indica, commonly known as the prickly pear cactus, is a robust, succulent plant featuring flattened, paddle-shaped stems called cladodes. At heights of 40-70 cm, these green, fleshy pads are dotted with clusters of small spines and glochids (tiny, hair-like spines). The plant is known for its vibrant yellow to orange flowers that bloom in late spring to summer, followed by oval, edible fruits with a sweet, juicy pulp that turns reddish-purple when ripe. The fleshy pads and fruit are both edible, making this cactus a popular choice for culinary and ornamental use.
