Machaerocereus gummosus, also known as the Pitaya Agria or Sour Pitaya, is a remarkable cactus species native to the Baja California region in Mexico. This cactus is distinctive for its sprawling, shrub-like growth habit, which can reach up to 2 meters in height. Unlike the typical upright cacti, Machaerocereus gummosus tends to grow in a more horizontal manner, with stems that often lie close to the ground or hang over rocks.

The cactus is characterized by its thick, fleshy stems that are armed with clusters of spines. These spines can vary in length and color, ranging from yellowish to gray, and provide the plant with a rugged, textured appearance.
