Product Description

The Canasta lettuce is a highly appreciated variety for its curly and crunchy leaves, which form a compact and round head. This lettuce is ideal for fresh salads, thanks to its delicate flavor and satisfying texture. Growing Canasta Lettuce from seed is relatively simple and can offer abundant production if you follow some basic guidelines.

Cultivation from Seed

  1. Soil Preparation: Canasta Lettuce grows best in fertile, well-drained soils rich in organic matter. Work the soil to a depth of 8-12 inches, mixing in compost or well-rotted manure to improve the soil structure and fertility.

  2. Sowing: Canasta Lettuce seeds can be sown directly in the garden from spring to early summer, or even in late summer for a fall harvest in milder climates. Sow the seeds shallowly, at a depth of about 0.2 inches, and keep the soil moist until germination. Seeds should sprout in 7-14 days.

  3. Spacing: After germination, thin the seedlings to leave about 12-14 inches of space between each plant. This allows the plants to fully develop without competing for light, water, and nutrients.

  4. Watering: Canasta Lettuce requires consistent watering to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Avoid wetting the leaves directly to reduce the risk of fungal diseases.

  5. Harvesting: Canasta Lettuce is ready for harvest when the head is compact and the outer leaves are well-developed. This usually occurs 60-70 days after sowing. You can harvest the entire plant by cutting the head at the base or by picking individual leaves as needed.

  6. Crop Rotation and Disease Management: To prevent pest and disease problems, it's advisable to practice crop rotation and keep the growing area clean of plant debris. Regularly monitor plants and apply biological treatments at the first sign of problems.

Growing Canasta Lettuce from seed can be a pleasant and productive activity, bringing freshness and nutrition to your table. Thanks to its relatively fast growth and ease of care, this variety is suitable for both novice and experienced gardeners.
