Product Description

Copiapoa is a genus of flowering plants in the cactus family Cactaceae, from the dry coastal deserts particularly the Atacama desert of northern Chile.

The Copiapoa cinerea x humilis is a rare and fascinating hybrid cactus that combines the distinctive traits of two Copiapoa species: Copiapoa cinerea and Copiapoa humilis. This hybrid is appreciated among cactus enthusiasts for its unique appearance and its adaptability to cultivation under specific conditions.

Description

The hybrid showcases characteristics from both parent species. It typically inherits the robust, globular to columnar growth form from Copiapoa cinerea, known for its dense, greyish-green to blue-green bodies covered in a thick, waxy coating to reduce water loss. From Copiapoa humilis, it often adopts a more compact size and the tendency to cluster, producing offsets around the base of the mother plant.

The spination of Copiapoa cinerea x humilis can be quite variable, reflecting a mix of both parents’ traits. It may feature the long, needle-like spines of C. humilis, the shorter and more densely packed spines of C. cinerea, or something in between. The flowers of this hybrid are typically yellow, blooming near the crown of the plant in the summer, similar to many Copiapoa species.

Cultivation Tips

Cultivating Copiapoa cinerea x humilis requires attention to several key factors to mimic its natural habitat conditions as closely as possible:

  • Light: This hybrid thrives in bright light. It prefers full sun to partial shade, but in extremely hot climates, some afternoon shade may be beneficial to prevent sunburn.

  • Soil: Well-draining soil is crucial. A cactus or succulent mix, potentially amended with perlite or pumice, will ensure proper drainage and prevent root rot.

  • Watering: Water moderately during the growing season (spring to autumn), allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during the winter months to mimic the natural dry season and to encourage flowering.

  • Temperature: Copiapoa cinerea x humilis is best suited to warm temperatures but can tolerate cooler conditions during its dormant winter period. Protect it from frost, as it is not frost-hardy.

  • Feeding: A low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer can be applied sparingly during the growing season to support healthy growth without encouraging excessive water retention.

Due to its rarity and the specific care it requires, Copiapoa cinerea x humilis is particularly prized among collectors. Successfully cultivating this hybrid can be especially rewarding, as it not only adds a unique specimen to a collection but also serves as a testament to the grower’s skill in replicating the challenging conditions of the Atacama Desert, the natural habitat of Copiapoa species
