Product Description

Copiapoa is a genus of flowering plants in the cactus family Cactaceae, from the dry coastal deserts particularly the Atacama desert of northern Chile.

It comprises 32 morphologically defined species and 5 heterotypic subspecies.

Copiapoa cinerea x atacamensis is a rare hybrid resulting from the cross between Copiapoa cinerea and Copiapoa atacamensis, two species native to the coastal and desert regions of Chile. Here's a description of this hybrid and some cultivation tips:

Description: Copiapoa cinerea x atacamensis typically exhibits a combination of traits from its parent species. It may have spherical to slightly elongated stems with prominent tubercles and woolly areoles, characteristic of Copiapoa species. The spines can vary in length and color, often ranging from light brown to grayish. This hybrid may produce yellow or orange flowers in spring or summer, adding to its ornamental value.

Cultivation Tips:

  1. Light: Provide Copiapoa cinerea x atacamensis with plenty of sunlight. Place it in a location where it can receive direct sunlight for several hours each day, preferably in a south-facing window or outdoors in a sunny spot.

  2. Temperature: This hybrid cactus thrives in warm to hot temperatures during the growing season. It can tolerate high temperatures but prefers cooler conditions in winter. Protect it from frost, as it is not cold hardy.

  3. Soil: Plant Copiapoa cinerea x atacamensis in well-draining soil specifically formulated for cacti and succulents. A mixture of sand, perlite, and potting soil works well. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.

  4. Watering: Allow the soil to dry out between waterings, especially during the winter months when the plant is dormant. Water sparingly but thoroughly, ensuring excess water drains away completely.

  5. Fertilization: Feed Copiapoa cinerea x atacamensis sparingly during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer diluted to half strength. Avoid fertilizing during the winter months when the plant is not actively growing.

  6. Potting: Repot the cactus every few years to refresh the soil and provide more space for growth. Use a slightly larger pot when repotting, but avoid excessive pot size, as Copiapoa species prefer snug conditions.

  7. Pest and Disease Control: Monitor for common cactus pests such as mealybugs and spider mites. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal diseases.

By following these cultivation tips, you can successfully grow and enjoy Copiapoa cinerea x atacamensis in your collection, appreciating its unique traits and ornamental value.
