Product Description

Buxus sempervirens, commonly known as Common Boxwood or European Boxwood, is a classic and versatile evergreen shrub appreciated for its dense, compact foliage and elegant appearance. This shrub has been used in gardens and landscapes for centuries, offering various practical and ornamental uses.

Common Boxwood is a slow-growing, evergreen shrub that typically reaches heights of 3 to 15 feet (1 to 4.5 meters) with a similar spread. It is known for its dense, small, oval to elliptical leaves that are glossy, dark green, and remain on the plant year-round. The leaves are arranged in opposite pairs along the branches, creating a lush, formal appearance. Common Boxwood can be pruned and shaped into various forms, making it a popular choice for hedges, topiaries, and formal garden designs. Inconspicuous flowers may appear in late winter to early spring, followed by small, inconspicuous fruits.

Cultivation:

  1. Climate: Common Boxwood is well-suited to temperate climates and is hardy in USDA zones 5 to 8. It can tolerate some heat but prefers mild winters and cool, moist summers.

  2. Sunlight: Plant Boxwood in a location that receives partial to full sunlight. While it can tolerate some shade, it thrives in bright, indirect light.

  3. Soil: Ensure well-draining, loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (around 6.0 to 7.5). Amending heavy or clayey soils with organic matter can improve drainage.

  4. Watering: Water young plants regularly to establish strong root systems. Once established, Common Boxwood is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from regular watering during dry spells, especially in the summer.

  5. Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as compost or shredded bark, around the base of the shrub to conserve soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds.

  6. Fertilization: Feed Boxwood in the spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer designed for shrubs and trees. Follow the recommended application rates on the fertilizer label.

  7. Pruning: Prune Common Boxwood as needed to maintain the desired shape and size. Regular pruning can help create formal hedges and topiaries.

  8. Pests and Diseases: Boxwood is susceptible to certain pests, including boxwood leafminer and boxwood mites. Inspect the plant regularly and treat infestations promptly. Watch for fungal diseases, especially in humid conditions, and ensure good air circulation.

  9. Propagation: Propagate Common Boxwood through semi-hardwood or hardwood cuttings taken in late summer or early autumn. Root cuttings can also be used for propagation.

Common Boxwood is a classic and timeless choice for gardens, providing year-round greenery and a versatile canvas for various landscape designs. With proper care and attention to its specific requirements, this evergreen shrub can become a durable and elegant addition to your outdoor space.
