Plant Description

Sabal minor, commonly known as the dwarf palmetto, is a small, hardy palm native to the southeastern United States. It typically grows to a height of 1-2 meters, with a trunk that is often subterranean, giving it a shrub-like appearance. The leaves are large, fan-shaped, and bluish-green, reaching up to 1 meter across. Each leaf is divided into numerous segments and supported by a long petiole. In late spring to early summer, it produces small, white flowers arranged in dense, branched inflorescences that extend above the foliage. These are followed by small, black drupes that attract wildlife.
