Product Description

Evodia daniellii, also known as Tetradium daniellii, is an attractive deciduous tree native to East Asia, particularly China and Korea. This tree is appreciated for its elegant appearance, clusters of fragrant white flowers, and distinctive pinnately compound leaves.

Evodia daniellii is a small to medium-sized tree that typically reaches a height of 20 to 40 feet (6 to 12 meters) with a similar spread. Its branches form a rounded crown, and the bark is smooth and grayish-brown. The leaves are compound, with multiple small leaflets arranged in a feather-like pattern. In late summer to early fall, the tree produces showy clusters of small, creamy-white, fragrant flowers that attract pollinators. These blooms are followed by small, reddish fruit capsules that add ornamental interest.

Cultivation:

  1. Location: Plant Evodia daniellii in a location with full sun to partial shade. It thrives in well-drained, fertile soil but can adapt to a range of soil types, including slightly acidic to slightly alkaline soils.

  2. Planting: When planting, dig a hole that is deep enough and wide enough to accommodate the tree's root ball. Ensure that the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Space trees at least 10 to 15 feet apart to allow for proper growth.

  3. Watering: During the first growing season, keep the soil consistently moist to help establish the tree. Once established, Evodia daniellii is relatively drought-tolerant and requires less frequent watering. However, provide supplemental irrigation during prolonged dry spells.

  4. Pruning: Minimal pruning is typically required for this tree. Remove any dead, damaged, or crowded branches in late winter or early spring to promote healthy growth and an attractive shape.

  5. Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the early spring to provide essential nutrients for growth. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for application rates.

  6. Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips or compost, around the base of the tree to help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.

  7. Pest and Disease Control: Evodia daniellii is generally resistant to most pests and diseases. However, keep an eye out for potential issues like aphids or scale insects and address them promptly if necessary.

  8. Cold Tolerance: While this tree is generally hardy, young plants may benefit from winter protection in regions with harsh winters. Covering the base with mulch and wrapping the tree with burlap can help prevent winter damage.

Evodia daniellii is a charming and low-maintenance tree that adds beauty and fragrance to your landscape. Its lovely flowers and graceful foliage make it an excellent choice for gardens, urban areas, or as a small ornamental shade tree.
