Product Description

Copiapoa humilis is a small, globular cactus endemic to the coastal areas of northern Chile, particularly thriving in desert conditions. This species typically forms clusters, with individual stems reaching up to 10 cm in diameter. Its body is dark green, sometimes appearing nearly black, and it is densely covered in white wool and yellow to brown spines that are about 1-2 cm long. Copiapoa humilis blooms with bright yellow flowers from the crown of the plant during the spring and summer, providing a striking contrast to its darker, woolly appearance

Cultivation

Soil

  • Type: Use a well-draining cactus mix.
  • Composition: A combination of sandy and gritty soil is ideal. You can mix equal parts of potting soil, coarse sand, and perlite or pumice.

Watering

  • Frequency: Water sparingly.
  • Method: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
  • Seasonal Adjustments: Reduce watering significantly in winter, as this cactus has a dormant period.

Light

  • Exposure: Prefers full sun to partial shade.
  • Protection: In extremely hot climates, provide some protection from intense midday sun to prevent scorching.

Temperature

  • Optimal Range: Thrives in warm temperatures (20-30°C).
  • Cold Tolerance: Can tolerate mild frost but should be protected from prolonged cold and freezing temperatures.

Fertilization

  • Type: Use a balanced, diluted cactus fertilizer.
  • Frequency: Fertilize during the growing season (spring and summer) about once a month. Avoid fertilizing in the winter.

Pruning

  • Necessity: Pruning is not typically necessary.
  • Maintenance: Remove any spent flowers and dead or damaged parts to maintain the plant's appearance and health.

Pests

  • Common Issues: Watch for mealybugs and spider mites.
  • Treatment: Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regularly inspect the plant to catch any issues early.

Additional Care

  • Airflow: Ensure good airflow around the plant to prevent fungal issues.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant outgrows its pot, using fresh cactus mix to provide new nutrients.
  • Placement: Indoors, place in a bright, sunny window. Outdoors, ensure the plant is in a location that receives ample sunlight.
