Product Description

Carpinus betulus 'Fastigiata,' commonly known as Pyramidal European Hornbeam, is a popular cultivar of European hornbeam known for its upright, columnar growth habit. It is a versatile and attractive tree that can add architectural interest to landscapes.

  1. Appearance: 'Fastigiata' is characterized by its narrow, upright growth habit, which gives it a distinctly pyramidal or columnar shape. It typically grows to a height of 30 to 40 feet (9 to 12 meters) with a spread of about 15 to 20 feet (4.5 to 6 meters) at maturity.

  2. Leaves: The leaves of 'Fastigiata' are dark green, oval to elliptical, and serrated along the edges. They turn a vibrant yellow or coppery-orange in the fall, providing a beautiful autumn display.

  3. Bark: The bark is smooth and gray when young, developing a ridged and fluted texture as the tree matures, similar to the typical European hornbeam.

  4. Flowers: European hornbeams, including 'Fastigiata,' produce inconspicuous catkin-like flowers in the spring. The flowers are not particularly showy.

  5. Fruit: This cultivar, like the species, produces small, winged nutlets in clusters. These nutlets persist on the tree into the winter months.

Cultivation:

  1. Climate: 'Fastigiata' can be grown in USDA hardiness zones 4 to 7. It is well-suited to temperate climates and can tolerate both cold winters and warm summers.

  2. Sunlight: Plant 'Fastigiata' in a location that receives full sun to partial shade. It can adapt to partial shade but will develop its characteristic upright form and dense crown in full sun.

  3. Soil: It prefers well-draining, loamy soil but is adaptable to various soil types. European hornbeams, in general, can tolerate a range of soil pH levels.

  4. Watering: During the establishment period, keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells. Once established, 'Fastigiata' is moderately drought-tolerant, but it benefits from regular watering during prolonged dry periods.

  5. Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and insulate the roots from temperature extremes.

  6. Pruning: Minimal pruning is typically required for 'Fastigiata.' However, you can prune to maintain its pyramidal shape, remove dead or crossing branches, and improve air circulation within the canopy.

  7. Fertilizing: While not heavy feeders, you can provide a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the early spring to promote healthy growth and foliage.

  8. Pests and Diseases: European hornbeams, including 'Fastigiata,' are generally resistant to common pests and diseases. Monitor for issues like aphids, scale insects, or leaf spot, and address them if they occur.

'Fastigiata' is an excellent choice for formal gardens, urban landscapes, or wherever a narrow, upright tree is desired. Its unique growth habit and attractive foliage make it a valuable addition to your landscape design. When selecting a location for planting, consider its mature size and ensure it has enough space to grow to its full potential without overcrowding.
