Product Description

Astrophytum myriostigma HYBRID

Description:

  • Appearance: Astrophytum myriostigma, commonly known as "Bishop's Cap" or "Bishop's Mitre," is a globular cactus with a typically light green body, which can vary slightly in shape from spherical to slightly cylindrical.

  • Size: It can reach a diameter of about 10-15 cm when fully grown, although sizes may vary depending on growth conditions and the age of the plant.

  • Flowers: In spring or early summer, it produces yellow or yellow-green flowers that bloom from the top of the plant. The flowers have a star-like shape and can reach up to 5 cm in diameter.

  • Spines: Astrophytum myriostigma has few, if any, spines. The spines are usually thin, rigid, and white or light yellow in color. Some varieties may also be nearly spineless.

Cultivation Tips:

  1. Light: Place Astrophytum myriostigma in a location that receives plenty of direct sunlight. These cacti thrive with at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day.

  2. Temperature: These cacti prefer warm temperatures during the day, between 21°C and 32°C. However, they can tolerate cooler temperatures at night, down to about 10-15°C. Avoid temperatures below 5°C, which could damage the plant.

  3. Soil: Use a well-draining soil specifically for cacti and succulents. You can also add sand or perlite to the soil to improve drainage.

  4. Watering: Water Astrophytum myriostigma only when the soil is completely dry. During the warmer months, it may require more frequent watering, but during winter, it's best to reduce watering to avoid waterlogging.

  5. Fertilization: Fertilize the plant with a diluted cactus fertilizer during the growing season, in spring and summer. Follow the instructions on the package to avoid over-fertilizing.

  6. Repotting: Repot Astrophytum myriostigma every 2-3 years or when the plant appears cramped in its current pot. Make sure to use a slightly larger pot with good drainage.

  7. Winter Protection: During colder months, protect the plant from frost. If grown outdoors in areas with harsh winters, it's advisable to move it to a sheltered location or cover it with a non-woven fabric.

  8. Pests and Diseases: Regularly check the plant for signs of insect infestations, such as aphids or spider mites. Treat infestations promptly with insecticides or natural solutions like neem oil.

By following these tips, you can successfully cultivate Astrophytum myriostigma and enjoy its beauty throughout the season.
