Product Description

Astrophytum asterias var. asterias (Dark Green) is a striking, slow-growing cactus native to Texas and northeastern Mexico. It features a flattened, disc-like body typically 2-6 cm tall and 5-15 cm in diameter, with distinct dark green skin adorned by white, woolly areoles arranged in radial patterns. The body often has 8 ribs, which are smooth and spineless. In late spring to early summer, it blooms with bright yellow, funnel-shaped flowers with orange throats. This cactus is highly prized for its unique appearance and low-maintenance care, thriving in well-draining soils and requiring minimal water.

Cultivation

  • Soil: Use a well-draining cactus mix; a combination of sandy and gritty soil works best.
  • Watering: Water sparingly; allow soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
  • Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade; protect from intense midday sun.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm temperatures (20-30°C); can tolerate mild frost but should be protected from prolonged cold.
  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced, diluted cactus fertilizer during the growing season.
  • Pruning: Not necessary; simply remove spent flowers to maintain appearance.
  • Pests: Monitor for mealybugs and spider mites; treat with insecticidal soap if needed.
  • Additional Care: Ensure good airflow around the plant to prevent fungal issues and promote healthy growth.
