Product Description

Calycanthus praecox, formerly known as Chimonanthus praecox, is a deciduous shrub native to East Asia, particularly China and Japan. Commonly known as Wintersweet, this plant is cherished for its unique combination of winter bloom, delightful fragrance, and charming appearance.

Wintersweet is best known for its highly fragrant flowers that bloom in the heart of winter, from December to March, depending on the region. The blossoms are typically waxy and nodding, with creamy white to pale yellow petals that are often tinged with maroon or purple at the base. The sweet and spicy fragrance of the flowers is reminiscent of cloves or cinnamon and can be quite strong, making it a popular choice for winter gardens or near walkways where the scent can be enjoyed.

The foliage of Calycanthus praecox is relatively unremarkable, with simple, oval-shaped leaves that are medium green in color and provide a backdrop to the vibrant blooms.

This shrub can reach a height of 6 to 12 feet (1.8 to 3.6 meters) with an upright to spreading growth habit. It prefers well-draining soil and a sunny to partially shaded location.

In addition to its visual and olfactory appeal, Wintersweet is also known for its use in traditional Chinese medicine for its potential medicinal properties.

Calycanthus praecox is commonly used in ornamental gardens, where it adds a touch of elegance and fragrance during the cold winter months. It can be grown as a specimen plant, in mixed borders, or as part of a shrubbery, providing a unique and delightful winter experience for garden enthusiasts.
