Plant Description

Aesculus pavia, commonly known as the Red Buckeye, is a deciduous shrub or small tree that adds a burst of vibrant color to woodland areas and gardens. Native to the southeastern United States, this eye-catching plant is cherished for its showy flowers and distinctive palmately compound leaves.

In spring, before the emergence of its leaves, the Red Buckeye graces the landscape with striking clusters of tubular, red to orange-red flowers. These blossoms, arranged in a cone-shaped inflorescence, attract hummingbirds and butterflies, adding an element of wildlife attraction to the garden.

The palmately compound leaves consist of five elliptic to lance-shaped leaflets with serrated edges. The foliage is a rich green during the growing season, providing a lush backdrop to the vibrant flowers. In autumn, the leaves may turn shades of yellow before falling, contributing to the plant's seasonal appeal.

Aesculus pavia thrives in well-drained, moist soils and prefers partial shade to full sun, making it well-suited for woodland gardens or shaded landscapes. Its relatively compact size, reaching around 10 to 20 feet (3 to 6 meters) in height, makes it suitable for smaller gardens.

Beyond its ornamental value, the Red Buckeye has historical significance, as various parts of the plant were reportedly used by Native American tribes for medicinal purposes. With its captivating blossoms and attractive foliage, Aesculus pavia stands as a charming addition to gardens seeking a touch of native beauty.
