Product Description

Dioon angustifolium is a rare, stemless cycad endemic to Tamaulipas, Mexico, with elegant narrow leaflets that give it a finely textured, almost feathery look. Its blue-green leaves arch gracefully from a central crown and can reach up to 1 meter in length, forming a dense, symmetrical rosette. Unlike most cycads, its leaflets are slender and soft-edged, arranged in a slightly spiraled pattern. This slow-growing species thrives in arid, limestone-rich habitats and is considered one of the most delicate and graceful members of the Dioon genus.

Cultivation

Soil type: Requires very well-drained, alkaline to neutral soil—ideally sandy-loam or limestone-based.

Watering frequency: Water moderately during growing season; allow soil to dry out between waterings. Minimal water in winter.

Light exposure: Full sun to partial shade; protect from intense midday sun in very hot climates.

Temperature requirements: Prefers 18 °C to 38 °C (64 °F to 100 °F); avoid prolonged exposure below 5 °C (41 °F).

Fertilization: Use a low-nitrogen, slow-release fertilizer once in spring. Avoid overfeeding.

Pruning: Remove only dead or damaged fronds.

Common pests: Rarely affected but may attract scale insects or root mealybugs in pots.

Other care practices: Excellent for xeriscaping; avoid overwatering and ensure excellent drainage.
