Product Description

The Cephalocereus senilis, commonly known as the Old Man Cactus, is a distinctive columnar cactus species noted for its long, white, hair-like spines that give it a unique, woolly appearance. This slow-growing cactus can reach impressive heights of up to 15 meters in its native habitat in Mexico. The hair-like spines not only give the plant its name but also protect it from the intense sun and help retain moisture. Beneath the white "hair," the green stem is ribbed and can occasionally produce small, tubular, pink or yellow flowers at the top when the plant is mature.

Cultivation

Soil type: Prefers well-draining, sandy to rocky soil with minimal organic content; tolerates poor soils well.

Watering frequency: Low to moderate; allow the soil to dry completely between waterings.

Light exposure: Thrives in full sun to partial shade; more compact in brighter light.

Temperature requirements: Grows best in 20–35°C (68–95°F); avoid exposure below 10°C (50°F).

Fertilization: Apply a low-nitrogen, slow-release fertilizer in spring and midsummer.

Pruning: Trim only fully dead fronds at the base; avoid damaging the crown.

Common pests: Susceptible to scale insects and mealybugs; treat promptly to avoid infestations.

Other care practices: Avoid overwatering; ideal for xeriscaping and container cultivation in warm climates.
