Alnus cordata 50-90cm
Alnus cordata 50-90cm
Product Description
Alnus cordata, commonly known as the Italian Alder, is a deciduous tree that brings a touch of elegance to landscapes. Native to southern Italy, this medium to large-sized tree is appreciated for its distinctive features, adaptability, and ecological contributions.
The Italian Alder boasts a pyramidal to conical crown, reaching heights of 50 to 70 feet (15 to 21 meters) at maturity. Its glossy, dark green leaves are elliptical with serrated edges, creating a lush canopy during the growing season. In autumn, the foliage takes on warm yellow tones before gracefully dropping, adding a subtle display of fall color.
What sets Alnus cordata apart is its tolerance to wet or waterlogged soils. It is often found near riverbanks or in areas with high water tables, where its ability to fix nitrogen in the soil makes it valuable for improving soil fertility. The bark is grayish and smooth when young, developing shallow fissures as the tree matures.
The Italian Alder produces catkins, with both male and female flowers, in early spring. The male catkins are pendulous, while the smaller female catkins become cone-like structures containing seeds.
Commonly used in urban and riparian plantings, Alnus cordata contributes not only to the aesthetic appeal of landscapes but also to soil improvement and stabilization. Its adaptability to various soil conditions, coupled with its attractive form, makes it a valuable asset in a range of environmental settings.
