Product Description

Agave ferox clone OLYMPIA (ex Van Dyck, Netherlands) is a specific clone of Agave ferox, commonly known as the Ferocious Agave or Hardy Century Plant, is a stunning and robust species of agave that is both an ornamental marvel and a resilient succulent for dry gardens. Here's a detailed description and some cultivation tips:

Description

  • Size & Structure: A large, rosette-forming succulent, Agave ferox can reach up to 1.5 to 2 meters in height and 2 to 3 meters in width. The leaves form a dense, symmetrical rosette.
  • Leaves: The leaves are broad, thick, and fleshy, usually a deep green color, sometimes with a blue or grayish tint. They feature sharp, serrated edges and a prominent, pointy tip.
  • Flowers: It blooms rarely, often taking years to develop a towering flower spike that can be several meters tall. The flowers are usually yellow or greenish-yellow.
  • Growth Rate: Like most agaves, it has a slow growth rate.

Cultivation Tips

  1. Sunlight: Prefers full sun. It thrives in areas that receive several hours of direct sunlight daily.
  2. Soil: Requires well-draining soil. A mix designed for cacti and succulents is ideal.
  3. Watering: Water sparingly. The plant is drought-tolerant, so it's better to under-water than over-water. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings.
  4. Temperature: Hardy in various climates but prefers warm temperatures. Protect from frost, as it is not frost-tolerant.
  5. Fertilizing: Minimal fertilization is needed. You can use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer once a year in spring.
  6. Propagation: Propagates through offsets or “pups” that grow at the base of the parent plant. They can be removed and replanted.
  7. Pests and Diseases: Generally resistant to pests and diseases, but watch for agave snout weevil and fungal diseases in overly moist conditions.
  8. Lifespan & Blooming: Agaves bloom once in their lifetime, after which they typically die. This monumental flowering event can take many years to occur.
